Inflation my ass!

Monday, June 4th, 2007
Being a geek comes with several down falls, one of which is the need for copious amounts of cash to buy fun gadgets we love so very much. This is hindered by life’s little bastard money suckers. This bastards can include: rent, food, cloths, car stuffs, and of course college tuition. Now if the college tuition was being paid for after college and had good job to pay for said tuition and more, this conversation wouldn’t come up. However, since I’m in college and need all the money I can get a new job was in order. Granted I love my current job at the tech center. I do my homework and get paid for it, what better job then that. However its wage is slightly lower than what’s needed for my lifestyle. Lifestyle as being gadgety goodness. So, I went on a few hunts. I got a interview @ this place in St. Louis (blogged about it many moons ago) nothing ever came of that, they just keep say’n, “Your at the top of our list, just give us a bit longer.” Blah Blah Blah BS! What ever, so I saw there was a job @ the Edwardsville Public Library. Of course I was super extra mega over qualified for the job, but hell, I could use another cake job which pays a bit more and can work me weekends (which is what I needed). Low and behold, not to my surprise, they offered me the job today. With the extra income, I figured I should be able to afford my baby after a few months, gotta pay one of the bastards for summer.

What really erks me, now that you have heard the story, is the job only pays 10 bux an hr. Now most of you may think, Wow thats a ton what are you complaining about. Well here’s the thing, I made 10 bux and hr when I was 16. Seeing how inflation is around 3%, this wage should be closer to 13 - 14 bux an hr. Funny how gas and wages generally don’t follow inflation. Although, you really don’t want me to get into the whole fuel debate, it would get as heated as a religion debate.

Oh, whats my baby.. heh.. The Thinkpad X61 laptop.. Makes me “hard” (updated for Jessica pointing out the obvious flaw in the use of the word wet) just think’n about it. Weights like 3 lbs w/ the extra super length battery, lasts about 8 - 10+ hrs on a charge, built like a tank (I have an x31 and its still tick’n). With all the options I want its around 1800.

Anyways, Just wanted to update/vent, Inflation my ass!

We don’t need no stink’n VMWare..

VMWare has been around for a long while, and is a fantastic product. However, if you want to be a law bidding internet go’re, its not in the price range of someone like me. Low and behold, VirtualBox has become open source and our savior! There are a few VM applications out there such as qemu, but they aren’t as user friendly as VMWare. VirtualBox its a good substitute and its FREE. Also its cross-platformed, so far it seems pretty smooth. The install was a breeze, they had an Ubuntu package for the recent releases. I didn’t however see any RPM’s, which doesn’t bother me to much, not a fan.

To test it I decided to give Fedora Core 6 a whirl as well as the new Ubuntu test. The mouse control was quick and responsive, video looks good. I’ll put an update once I get a few installed and working. Maybe even though Winblows on there.

The only problem I ran into is that I have to run it as root, which I don’t like so much, but I’m sure I’m just do’n something wrong.

Because they can…

Ever wanted to be the ruler of your own nation? Invite hot women to your island, and pass a law that they all have to be naked…. Yeah I thought you did. Well the Pirates Bay crew are try’n to buy a structure out in the middle of no were to get around international copyright laws. I really wish I could donate, but seeing how I barely have enough money for my tuition, that would be kinda stupid. Please donate to make this vision come true and allow piracy information sharing to continue!

It has begun….

All the Apple geeks out there have been frett’n about this and theorizing around the new iPhone for a while now. Many rumors and fake pictures of it has floated around the net but now its official. The comic below reminds me of what happened when they finally saw/read the news about the iPhone. Here’s some pictures from the keynote. You can also watch it on Apples site I believe. In all actuality, I kinda want one. ;-)

I’d wear it…

Wow, now thats a funky look’n watch. I’ve seen the binary wrist watches, but none of them looked nice enough to actually wear. This watch however really look nice. Although, I will admit, its a bit on the large side. The blue makes up for it ;-). Never the less, I’d wear it sometimes. The price is a bit outta my range, 85 bux.. uggh.
