Kingdom of Loathing

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

I’ve played my share of web games.  I get bored at work, and don’t always have a good enough comp to play extensive games. So I go to fun web games to take up the time.  Normally they catch my attention for a while, but then they just get boring.  I started playing Kingdom of Loathing. It’s a web RPG that goes beyond normal web RPG’s.  Think of how a game would be if you had a bunch of super geeks who drink all the time and can’t draw.  Thats KoL.  Everything is stick drawn, and everything is witty, and references to a ton of stuff intertwined.  You can find refernces from movies, to history, to books, to poetry.   I commonly use the KoL Wiki to search for howto’s and info about items and quests.  Pretty indepth stuff for a simple web game.  I highly recommend it to anyone who has a desk job or dosen’t like to / can’t play the mainstream games.

Big Bang…

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

Everyone know’s I’m a big geek.  I started watching a show that i can relate to.  Its called “The Big Bang Theory.”  It’s about these 4 genious nerds who have this gourges beauty move next door.  She’s not a genious like they are so the jokes they make go right over her head.  These guys are super nerds, they work for the physics departments of a local university and meet many of the stereo types of geeky people.  They play WOW, Halo, watch sci-fi, chat on the net, have blogs, etc.  So when they get thrown into every day situations, they are clueless on how to act.  So halarious.  If you know physics and calculus, the jokes some of the jokes will make perfecdt scense.  However if your not familar with high end sciences, well the jokes are still funny, you just may not understand some of them.  Anyways, i Highly recommend watching it.  It plays on CBS, and the next episode will air early next year.  Here’s a little teaser.

Vendetta Online

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

I recently stumbled across the game Vendetta Online, a very small fun space MMO. What makes this game different from the rest, aside from the whole space part, is the physics used in game. There aren’t a lot of them out there, but the ones that are use a standard terrestrial physics. As in you turn right, your whole ship turns right as well as your direction of movement. Anyone who knows physics knows this is not true in space. As an old physicist once said, “Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.” This would mean if you thrusted forward, then turned your ship around without actually applying a force to change the direction of your ship, you would be flying essentially backwards. Which is how it should be. Thus what this game has adopted. Now you can turn this on and off, as in you can let your on board computer compute the proper course adjustments to simulate the standard flight model for games, or so says their website.

I played this game 8 hours almost solid. The combat is fun, not so challengeing to me at the moment, although I understand 3D movment very well and am able to avoid any most shots fired at me. What makes this game kinda interesting is you can create your own sorta macros. If you wanted to bind a button on your keyboard that would do several actions for you, you could and very easily. I’m using one to toggle the turbo button rather then having to hold it down. I wanna make one that simplifies mining, which is the next topic of discussion.

Other than combat as with any (space) game, there are two other activities you can do. Mine and trade. Now mining is fairly boring, to me anyways although I would have to say a bit more interesting when your in a sector with combatants shooting at you while your trying to mine. Also, the asteroids get kinda close together, to get one that you really want to mine might be tricky and take a lot of course corrections, unlike EVE where you could mine 15k away, safe from the other asteroids, you have to be within 100m of the object. I thought it was kinda fun to mine within an asteroid. There are a few that are hollow ones with green something in the middle of them. I doubt that helps mine anything better, but it was still fun to show off my mad skillz and navigate though this tiny asteroid. I hope there’s more stuff like that later in the game.

One thing that is different is the monthly cost. Most MMO’s now are 15+, this one is 10 a month with standard discounts for paying for bulk months. The last really neat thing is development for this game has spanned across all the platforms, so its not discriminative to the OS you like. Linux, OS X, Winblows they all play the same. I’m playing as Wedgen, if you deside to give it a try, hit me up.

300 in red

Friday, March 9th, 2007
Just got back from watching the midnight showing of 300. Going into the movie I had no idea what to expect because I hadn’t heard anything about it. However, a bunch of friends of mine convinced me to go.

First thing I noticed right off the bad was the clothing, or lack there of. Almost every character in the movie had about 1/3rd of their bodies covered or less. Most of the men were wearing leather underwear and a cape. I’m sure the women will like at least that aspect, mostly because every actor in the movie was built. Ripped stomachs and huge pecks. All the women in the movie were very trim as well. You will also notice during the first few scenes of the movie that the director liked breasts, he flaunted them from the start. Just about every woman had THO going on, and in 2 scenes in a row there were a few topless. There was also a very interesting sex scene, nice and graphic what everyone likes.

The cinematography was excellent, the colors, lighting, everything was excellent. The director really knew what he was doing. Also, the choreography was very excellent, the moves were well thought out.

There were a few things that I did not like all that much. First the CG blood got to me after a while. It just didn’t look right, reminded me of recent movie Kung Pow, they had a bunch of CG blood and was very cheezy, although it was supposed to be cheezy. Also the guy who played the king had a weird jaw, and would talk almost as if he was trying to look like a cow chew’n it’s cud. Best analogy I’ve got.

Other than that, a great movie worth seeing on the big screen. Some good humor mixed into the utter blood bath as well.
